Art In Motion Present Each To Another
Neurodiverse artists and artists with learning disabilities create their own art activity book to challenge assumptions of who gets to teach art
Each to Another is a new art activity book that showcases seven neurodiverse artists and artists with learning disabilities. The artists are from the collective Art in Motion - a not-for-profit participatory arts charity based in Bristol, UK, that supports and empowers artists who face disabling barriers to reach their full artistic potential.
The featured artists in Each to Another are: Jonathan Barr Lindsay, Jeff Johns, Louise Morgan, Dave Pearse, Beth Richards, Chris Rose, and Betty Sargent.
Readers can get creative with this fun and easy workbook through exercises and activities designed by the seven artists. Try making collages with Beth and Jeff, portraits with Jonathan, or blend poetry and plasticine with Betty and Dave.
Colin Higginson, founder and director of Art in Motion, says:“We learn most about ourselves and our art when we have to teach others what we do. As neurodiverse artists and artists with learning disabilities, the Art in Motion collective often find themselves invited to participate but rarely facilitate, often missing out on the invaluable gains that come from teaching others. The aim of the ‘Each to Another’ project was to reverse that, and in doing so, challenge any preconceived ideas of who is the teacher and who is the student.”
The Each to Another project and publication has been devised and led by artist collective Art in Motion in collaboration with indie press and publishing studio No Bindings, with support from Bristol Libraries, Spike Island Artspace and Arnolfini.
Lily Green, director of No Bindings, says:“After seeing neurodiverse artist collectives like Project Art Works nominated for the Turner Prize, this activity book is part of an important shift towards recognising neurodiverse artists and artists with learning disabilities for their skills, vision and art. In creating the book with these artists over a three year period, we hope that it reflects both their individual practice, their relationship as a group and ultimately gives readers an opportunity to have fun and learn from these artists.”
Each to Another is published 31 January 2022 and can be purchased directly from the publisher No Bindings at nobindings.co.uk, or, from the Arnolfini Bookshop.
There will be a launch of this book at the Arnolfini on the 3rd of March between 11am - 3pm.
